Nina Morgan
Nina was called 'Angel to 3rd World Children' in an article in the Bangkok press. She has her Masters Degree in Education and has been a practicing professional educator for many years. Her passion however has taken her into development work, which she has been doing now for several years. As a GMF Envoy, Nina has had some spectacular achievements working in Uganda with orphans and widows. She has provided guidance and compassion to those she works with. Nina also does much of the the teacher training that GMF is involved in and enjoys the travel and new experiences. Nina has become more of a 'world citizen' than belonging to any country than any one else we know. One of her friends refers to her as the 'stubborn angel' because once she has a cause, she does everything possible to succeed from fund raising and speaking engagements to slinging mud onto a new home in construction. Nina has a knack of conveying her passion and devotion to the cause of providing access to information. Much of what we have accomplished in the field is directly related to her volunteer work. Even while Nina is working for pay, she is plotting her next move in changing the lives of the AIDs orphans of Uganda. Below is her Bio. Christina Morgan –Curriculum Vitae Name: Christina M. At PRIA I had the opportunity to conduct educational research in rural Rajasthan looking at how the national policy of Universal Primary Education was being implemented. Most Recent Employer: San Silvestre School - Lima, Peru. Feb.2003-Dec. 2004 Status: Classroom and Subject Teacher Position Held: Grade 3 Pertinent Experience: I was employed at an elite, British School, in Lima, Peru. I taught grade three mathematics, English and Social Studies. The school is mainly an English emersion school. I had special responsibilities in implementing ICT in education for the junior section of the school. I was at the San Silvestre for two years. In the second year, I co-organised a school play for 8-11 years olds (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). We felt that producing a high quality play, as part of the English emersion program would be challenging, and a fun way for the students to practice their English. The play was very successful and raised 10,000 soles. The profit was used to buy resources for the library. More than 60 students participated. A local media production company made a DVD available to parents. I am well thought of at the school and have been heavily involved in the curriculum development for the elementary division of the school. I actively used technology in my classroom. I maintained a class website that the students continually interacted with and I used my own computer and computer projector for my class. I also heavily used digital cameras and video equipment that I have purchased for my classroom so that it is available for my use at all times. This has permitted me to create many unique experiences for my students and aided in bringing a wealth of learning resources to my students. (See letter of reference) Past Employers: Satit Kaset Laboratory School, International Program, Kasetsart University - Bangkok, Thailand April 2001- Aug. 2002 Status: Classroom and Subject Teacher Position Held: Grades 4,5,6,7 Pertinent Experience: After completing my undergraduate degree I accepted a job at Satit Kaset School in Bangkok teaching grade 6 in the international program where English is spoken. The position was a challenging one, as the students had not yet achieved a satisfactory level of English. I worked hard to bring their English skills up. Mid way through the year, I decided that an English emersion addition would improve their skill levels. I arranged for a trip to Canada during the students' vacation period. Many of the students were able to go. I made all the arrangements with three different schools in Canada to host us for a 4-week stay. During our stay in Canada, the children had a chance not only to improve their English skills but also to participate in Canadian culture. The experience was a rich and rewarding one for both my students and me. During my stay at Satit Kaset I was entrusted with the job of purchasing English books for the new school library. I placed several hundred volumes of books in the library. I believe that my efforts at Satit Kaset were well rewarded by the advances that the students displayed. I taught English, Science, Math, Art, Health and Developmental Skills and Cooking. The extra curricular activities I was involved with include the field trip to Canada, preparing for a school play as well as sponsoring the first science fair at the school. I also initiated and designed digital report cards for the school. I was responsible for some of the curriculum design as well. (See letter of reference) Education Online Ltd. I worked for Education Online in 2000 for several months prior to my undergraduate graduation from University. Education Online Ltd. is a company delivering literacy programs via the Internet into schools and homes in the USA, Canada, Britain and South America. My role was to develop courseware for distance education delivery. I developed several courses and published them on the Internet. During the few months that I work for EOL, I was sent to Britain to train staff on the development of distance education materials that were to be delivered via the Internet. These materials were originally developed at Christ Church College, England. I was also sent to branch offices in North America to train teachers and technical staff. Schoolnet India I worked with School Net India in 1999 for several months in Mumbai, India. School Net India's objective was to create an Internet based learning network that would service every part of India's public and private schools. During my stay, I was responsible for the development of online materials for the National Curriculum and their posting to the School net India web site. My objective was not only to have the materials posted but also to train a technical team to be able to continue this work. I was also responsible for part of the training program for teacher trainers offered by School net India. I ran classes for teachers on how to integrate computer technology into the classroom effectively and helped the training team revise their program. These ventures were considered a success by School net India and their Canadian partner. I left School net India to continue my studies at university. Morgan Media I worked for Morgan Media Inc., an education software company part time from 1995 to 1999. During this time, I aided in the media development of a large number of software titles. I participated and received credit for my work on a project called 'Making History' which won the Canadian National Film Board's best Interface Award. I worked with many top-notch professional educators who were creating both products and Internet software to support the development of 'communities of learners'. I conducted dozens of workshops for teachers on the use of technology in the classroom and was considered one of the best employee/trainers the company had. WhiteBear Media Ltd. I worked on a project in conjunction with Whitebear Media (published by Morgan Media Inc.) The project, Base Station Safari was one of the first full scale multimedia education software developments created (Completed 1996).

I was responsible for the processing and formatting of all of the pictures and video for the project. A copy of the CD is available upon request. Volunteer work 2007-Present: I am currently working in Uganda to assist AIDS orphans. I have developed and maintained a web site and have been very involved in the planning and development of the plans to build a school for many of Uganda’s AIDS orphans. 2003-2004: I worked at a women’s centre located in an impoverished community on the outskirts of Lima, Peru. Almost every Saturday from April until November 2003, myself and another teacher worked with young women teaching them English. This was a very powerful experience for me and helped me change how I saw my role as teacher. Over the time we spent teaching these girls, my teaching partner and I underwent a significant transformation from thinking we has it figured out to realizing that there was a tremendous amount that we had and could learn from our students. By the end of our time with these young women our teaching had changed from us teaching what we thought they needed, to letting them and their needs direct our teaching. Awards: University of Victoria Fellowship 2005-2007 University of Victoria Faculty Scholarship 2000 University of Victoria Presidents Scholarship 2000 Frank and Margaret Gibb Scholarship 2000 Additional Skills and Interests: I have a great deal of experience in digital video, digital photography, web site development and general use of the computer in classrooms. I have helped teachers integrate ICT in Uganda, Thailand, India, Peru and Canada. I also have experience in doing participatory research and have published my finding on my thesis online and would like to continue doing educational research in the years to come. One of my favorite subjects to teach is Art. I have taken a variety of courses in printmaking, drawing, ceramic sculpting and painting. My mother is a well-known professional artist and visual arts have been a part of my life since I was a young child. I love sharing ideas and seeing students express themselves. I am also very interested in philosophy for children and in teaching thinking skills. I have used several philosophy programs and thinking skill programs both in my practicum and in my teaching jobs. Getting children to mediate in their metacognitive processes is something that I think is extremely important and is one of the major foundations for successful academic life. Finally, I am an avid reader and learner. I love to read and share what I am learning with others. I believe the best teachers operate in the capacity of senior learners and learning guides. I have been fortunate to have some wonderful teachers in my life and I aspire to be that to the people that I teach. I believe that a great teacher can transforms lives.
